Sacroiliac Joint Injections
BACKGROUND
The sacroiliac joints are located where the base of the spine and back of the pelvis bones meet.
This procedure is performed to relieve pain caused by sacroiliac joint dysfunction.
PROCEDURE
Sometimes this injection is done with a local anesthetic for diagnostic purposes.
Other times a long-lasting steroid (cortisone-like medication) is injected into the sacroiliac joint to help decrease inflammation and swelling of tissue in the joint space.
Patients may experience reduced pain for days to several months after the injection.
