Epidural Injections (Interlaminar and Transforaminal)

Background

  • Epidural steroid injection (ESI) is a minimally invasive procedure that can help relieve neck, upper extremity, back, and lower extremity pain caused by inflamed spinal nerves.

  • Pain can be due to spinal stenosis or a pinched nerve root from a herniated disc.

Procedure

  • Epidural injections of steroid (a cortisone-like medication) may reduce the inflammation or swelling around nerves roots where they come out of the spine. This can reduce pain, tingling, and numbness.

  • Involves using x-ray guidance to insert a needle through the skin and deeper tissues in order to deliver anti-inflammatory steroid medication close to the source of the pain.

  • Pain relief can last from days to years, allowing your spinal condition to improve with greater tolerance of physical therapy and exercise.
