Epidural Injections (Interlaminar and Transforaminal)
Background
Epidural steroid injection (ESI) is a minimally invasive procedure that can help relieve neck, upper extremity, back, and lower extremity pain caused by inflamed spinal nerves.
Pain can be due to spinal stenosis or a pinched nerve root from a herniated disc.
Procedure
Epidural injections of steroid (a cortisone-like medication) may reduce the inflammation or swelling around nerves roots where they come out of the spine. This can reduce pain, tingling, and numbness.
Involves using x-ray guidance to insert a needle through the skin and deeper tissues in order to deliver anti-inflammatory steroid medication close to the source of the pain.
Pain relief can last from days to years, allowing your spinal condition to improve with greater tolerance of physical therapy and exercise.
